I knew I had to read this novel when I saw the part of the summary that said Dickens quotes were coded into the "eulogist's" messages. I haven't read many romances where the author employed codes/ciphers/anagrams/etc in service of the plot- the last time was for the novel S by JJ Abrams and Doug Dorst (which was also a love story, and also a story I loved). That's where this novel shines brightest and stands out from its peers in contemporary romance. So much thought and care went into weaving codes into the story (both as plot points and Easter eggs). It's brilliant. You don't need to find the Easter eggs or solve the codes yourself to enjoy the story, but this device works well to make you feel, as a reader, like you're on a treasure hunt where the treasure at the end is the HEA between Chris and Sarah.I would describe this as a contemporary Christian romance. The faith of the characters plays an important part in the progression of their relationship and their goals/wants, as does the author's to the novel itself, but for me, as someone who does not identify as Christian and therefore does not typically read novels in that subgenre, I felt like it was beautifully woven into the fabric of the story. (The novel does contain some coarse language, as well as some sexually suggestive scenes and references to violence.)
The characters were very flawed and fallible, but still likable, people. This is a triumph of writing. As a reader, I want to like the characters enough to want to kick and scream at them when they mess up. And Deering does this well, playing with the ongoing misunderstandings between the two MCs and compounding the hurts between them while also somehow bringing them closer together at the same time.
TL;DR: An excellent debut by a skilled and clever writer who not only writes with brain, but heart.

The Napkin Eulogist was a pleasure to read! Codes are cleverly woven into the story as the main character, Chris, does his best (and repeatedly stumbles) to win over, Sarah, the woman who has captured his imagination and heart.
The witty banter between the two main characters is a joy to read, but the reader discovers that there is a tragic story hiding behind the humour. Chris made me want to throttle and hug him as he screws up and attempts to redeem himself. And there is more to Sarah than first meets the eye. Every revelation is an emotional discovery.
This is an engaging love story— funny, endearing, heart-breaking, and passionate. It tugged at my heart, made me laugh, and, despite Chris’s often frustrating choices, left me rooting for these two to break through the obstacles in their way.
I love a great redemption arc, and TNE did not disappoint. There is a sweet humanity to the characters that won me over. Well written, moving, and uplifting.
I loved the in the moment humor, which was consistent throughout the book, and which balanced the dealing with serious issues like loss. The characters were charming and endearing. Chris is quite the piece of work. The text conversations between the two main characters was hilarious. And to my surprise, I enjoyed reading from the man's (very frank) first person perspective. Overall, it was full of laughs, cries, and the ending was perfect.
Using a fun combination of anagrams and wit, Deering weaves a compelling tale of romance and self-discovery in The Napkin Eulogist. Picking up extra waiting shifts at his brother’s café, Chris notices a cute patron focused on some napkin-scribbling project. When she leaves before he can speak with her, leaving only a carefully coded eulogy on a napkin, Chris sets off on a journey to find her, the Napkin Eulogist, culminating in a best-selling book journaling his efforts. But he is not really a writer, and she is, and she is less than ecstatic that he wrote a book about her, a woman he had never actually met. Thus begins a rocky cross-country courtship, and Chris finds that the only way to win the woman of his dreams is to face a past that he never wanted to look at again.
Deering’s writing is funny and accessible and the characters are compelling. Altogether, The Napkin Eulogist makes for an engaging read.
The premise of the book seemed simple - a man infatuated with a coded message. Yet, the real mystery in this book was all the nuances in the codes. I loved how the author explained some of the codes, as I never would have gotten the majority of them.
The beginning was a little slow, but as the novel progressed more backstory was revealed that made me not want to put the book down and added several unique dimensions to what had seemed like predictable characters.
The codes and mysteries put a unique spin on the idea of a typical romance novel and there is one plot point I never saw coming that added instant reread appeal.
Overall; I would recommend this book, especially for anyone who likes to read deeper and find hidden messages left behind.

Within a couple chapters of reading this book I was hooked. The story is written from Chris, the male protagonist's point of view. Chris has written a bestseller based off a coded eulogy written on a napkin that is left behind at his brother's cafe. He longs to find the woman who wrote it, but when he does, trouble ensues. I enjoyed reading about the unfolding romance of Chris and Sarah in this story. I also appreciated the depth given to the other characters. They are well-fleshed out and interesting in their own right.
I purchased the paperback version of this book. It's very sturdy. The cover is made with a heavy stock and I particularly liked the larger paragraph indentation in the text. It made for easier reading.
I look forward to reading more of Deering's work. She has a strong writer's voice, a wicked sense of humor, and is very clever.
